Outreach & Prevention

Daybreak’s Outreach & Prevention Program provides services that are designed to:  (1) identify youth needing shelter; (2) help youth in crisis to access Daybreak services through neighborhood access points called Safe Place sites or by contact with the Street Outreach team; and (3) to eliminate risky situations that can lead to youth being kicked out
of the home by providing youth throughout Montgomery County with school- and community-based violence prevention.

Street Outreach

Staff work in the community identifying runaway and homeless youth who are living on the streets or "couch-hopping."  Their goal is to help stabilize these youth, to help them reduce risk-taking behavior, and, ultimately, to help them secure and maintain a safe place to live. Daybreak staff:

  • Answer Crisis Hotline calls to assist youth in accessing appropriate Daybreak services.
  • Canvass areas throughout the Miami Valley and respond to agencies and businesses to identify and connect with youth on the streets.
  • Provide material needs such as blankets, hats and scarves, food, and personal items.
  • Collaborate with other agencies to assist runaway and homeless youth who are without stable residence.
  • Provide information and referrals to help youth stay safe.

Violence Free Youth POWER Clubs

Ten-week POWER Clubs address the youth’s ability to recognize a potentially violent situation, to identify their
own anger triggers, and to recognize their stress. These, plus other skills that focus on effective communication
and interpersonal relationships, strengthen positive personal development and relationships within the family.

The POWER Clubs accept youth ages 8 to 21 who are open to addressing issues focusing on violence prevention and anger management. The programming addresses the youth’s ability to build and then practice
skills that will lead to healthy life choices. Youth will learn to:

  • Identify their anger triggers and calm themselves when they get angry.
  • Explore and develop productive ways of controlling and managing angry feelings.
  • Communicate and work through problems and conflicts non-violently.
  • Practice the concepts of conflict resolution to effectively solve problems in their own lives.
  • Make healthy choices and be responsible for their behavior.

Violence Free Youth Presentations

Violence Free Youth presentations are conducted in various schools throughout Montgomery County.
Three consecutive classes focus on recognizing violence and appropriate methods of diffusing
potentially violent situations. A variety of teaching methods, which include lectures, videos, and group
interactions, are used during the sessions. Students have opportunities to ask questions, get clarification,
and state opinions regarding the topic being discussed.

Violence Free Youth activities will provide youth with the skills and resources they need to stay safe and violence free. Youth will learn to:

  • Recognize behaviors that could potentially result in homelessness.
  • Recognize the cycle of violence.
  • Recognize the early warning signs of violence.
  • Keep family and peer arguments from escalating.
  • Access community resources to assist in addressing their needs.
