Safe Shelter Daybreak’s Emergency Shelter Program provides youth with physical safety and emotional support in addition to a variety of other services.
Emergency Shelter and Crisis Hotline
It's hard to comprehend, but every year hundreds of Miami Valley teenagers find themselves homeless. They
are being kicked out of or are running away from their own homes. They live in cars, hide in friends' basements
and public buildings, or try to survive on the streets. Unfortunately, the longer it takes for these young people
to get help, the more likely it is that they will adopt "survival" skills that are considered socially unacceptable
and even self-destructive.
Daybreak’s Emergency Shelter and Crisis Hotline are the Miami Valley's only crisis support for runaway, homeless, and neglected young people and accept youth 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Daybreak staff provide:
- 24-hour crisis hotline
- 24-hour emergency shelter and supervision
- Three meals a day and snacks
- Individual, family, and group counseling
- Structured daily activities
- Case management services
- Post-shelter follow-up through Daybreak's Homeward Bound program

Homeward Bound
A stay in the shelter is a temporary solution to an emergency situation. Many of these young people will return
to the shelter or, worse, the streets unless follow-up is provided to ensure a successful reunion with the family.
Their chances of dropping out of school, getting into trouble, and engaging in other forms of risk-taking behavior
will increase. If left unchecked, these youth are likely to become tomorrow's homeless population. Daybreak wants
to beat those odds, so we offer Homeward Bound.
Homeward Bound helps young people and their families set goals and work toward stable relationships. The
counseling provided by Homeward Bound assists families build better coping mechanisms and communication
skills so future problems won't escalate and result in a crisis.
Homeward Bound also works to connect families with resources right in their own neighborhoods. The family is
provided with a stronger support system and greater connection to the individuals and organizations in the
community where they live, work, and play. Community support, coupled with support from Daybreak, creates
a positive environment for long-term family stability.
Homeward Bound is available to
teens from other youth-serving agencies but does have a waiting list for counseling services.
If you or someone you know is interested in this program,
please call 937-461-1000 and ask to speak to a Homeward Bound Social
Worker. Homeward Bound maintains regular phone contact with a young person
and his/her family beginning one month after
the young person returns home and continuing for a full year. This
support is a critical factor in helping families
heal. Homeward Bound’s post-shelter support services are offered
at no cost to youth and their families and include:
- Crisis intervention
- Individual therapy/counseling
- Family therapy/counseling
- Phone support & home visits
- Referral and introduction to other community resources
